The national average UK c-section rate is sitting around 25% for the last couple of years, which is about 175,000 c-sections every year. Most of these women were hoping to have a natural birth, however when labour took an ‘unexpected turn’ – they were told they had no other option than to have a c-section.
When these mothers are pregnant with their next child, they are sometimes told it is not possible to have a vaginal birth after having a c-section (so-called VBAC). For a small number of women this is true; however for most women it is perfectly fine to have a natural birth. Even though of the scar tissue, there are some perceived risks, but with proper care and guidance you can safely give birth.
Many women are scared of child birth, and are not learned how to properly prepare the mind and body for childbirth. "There is no physiological function in the body that gives rise to pain in the normal course of health. In no other animal species is the process of birth apparently associated with any suffering, pain or agony, except where pathology exists except an unnatural state, such as captivity" wrote Dr Grantly Dick-Reid in his book Childbirth without Fear published in 1933 (!). What he describes is that when we are scared, our body diverts blood and oxygen to essential defence organs. During childbirth blood and oxygen are diverted away from the uterus and therefore it cannot perform properly. Remaining calm and relaxed during labour allows the uterine muscles to fill with blood and oxygen resulting them to work painlessly, like any other muscle in our body would. HypnoBirthing is based on this philosophy.
When pain relief is given during birth it alters the birthing process, and even worse in a lot of cases the pain relief doesn’t work at all. For example, when mum feels like she is losing control her heart rate goes up, as well as the baby’s heart rate resulting into more intervention with for many a c-section as the end result. As Albert Einstein said about the definition of insanity: “Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” You will not get a different result if you keep doing the same thing; it is as simple as that. That’s why the services at GMoB are designed to redefine what we consider to be ‘normal’. You will learn how to practise throughout the pregnancy preparing emotionally, physically and spiritually. The effects are evident and clinically proven: HypnoBirthing prepared births had shorter labour and births, less interfering, less tearing and higher Apgar scores and an overall more positive experience.
